Pointing Fingers: The Salem Witch Trials

The Salem Witch Trials are well known, but many do not know the details of these trials and how the hysteria spread. I can be the first to admit that I was one of those many who heard of it throughout middle school or high school, but I can not recollect any specific details. It was interesting to learn about the specific people involved as well as their occupations and how they were seen in the community. It allowed me to study the situation and come up with potential motivations behind the “finger-pointing” and accusations.

Living in this day and age and looking back at the time of the trials, many of us may find the documented accusations incredibly hilarious and not logical. It is upsetting to see that the executions were based on spectral evidence such as dreams and that many were innocent yet were killed just because they were seen as a competition or not liked for a specific action they conducted. It made me realize that if the judges had studied facts, personalities, and motivations rather than spectral evidence, this massacre may have been avoided.

To apply this to the world that we live in today, it is evident that the act of blaming, pointing fingers, and revenge seeking is still prevalent, but maybe not in the same manner as the Salem Witch Trials. With social media, many accusations are thrown around and false information can spread faster than ever. I believe that we should acknowledge that we are humans and we all make mistakes. Situations should not be treated “eye for eye and tooth for tooth” but rather with fairness. We must be aware of the truth and think about the given circumstances with our minds and experiences rather than feelings and what others claim. If we abide by truthfulness, we can avoid situations of anger and revenge like the Salem Witch Trials.

  1. I love your blog title, by the way, "Vera's Truth." The root of your name, as I am sure you know, comes from the Latin word for truth. And thanks for projecting what happened in Salem into our our present time. Social media is definitely responsible for egregious acts of finger-pointing and hurting innocent people.
